Description

A Heritage of Lacquer, Shaped by Time

Born from China’s centuries-old lacquer tradition, the Huashuo Xipi Lacquer Automatic Watch brings an intangible cultural heritage into the world of contemporary horology. Its dial is handcrafted using Xipi lacquer, an intricate technique known for its layered colors and naturally emerging textures. Rather than being painted or engraved, the distinctive patterns are revealed through repeated applications of colored lacquer, polishing, and refinement — making every dial inherently unique. Paired with a Swiss automatic movement and a precisely crafted 316L stainless steel case, the watch creates a dialogue between traditional Chinese craftsmanship and modern mechanical watchmaking. More than an instrument for measuring time, it carries the patience, artistry, and cultural memory of Chinese lacquer craftsmanship on the wrist.

Xipi Lacquer: A Living Chinese Craft

Xipi lacquer, also known as Xipi, Xipi lacquerware, or Tiger-Skin Lacquer, is a traditional Chinese lacquer technique developed through generations of meticulous craftsmanship. Its distinctive patterns emerge from layers of yellow, red, and black lacquer rather than from painted decoration or engraving. Artisans repeatedly apply colored lacquer, allow each layer to cure, and carefully polish the surface. As raised areas are gradually leveled, cross-sections of the underlying lacquer layers are revealed, creating naturally occurring patterns reminiscent of rhinoceros or tiger skin. Every surface is therefore shaped by patience, handwork, and the unpredictable beauty of the craft, making each lacquer dial uniquely its own.
