A Symphony of Chinese Imperial Craftsmanship

Inspired by the opulent clocks of China's imperial court, the Gilt-Bronze Auspicious Gourd Clock with Rotating Flowers and Waterworks brings together intricate metalwork, animated mechanical artistry and the timeless symbolism of traditional Chinese design. Its elegant gourd-shaped crown evokes dají (大吉), an auspicious wish for good fortune, while its richly gilded bronze case reflects the grandeur and refinement of Qing-dynasty decorative arts.

Crafted through traditional techniques including bronze casting, hand chasing, gilding, intricate carving, inlay and hand-painted decoration, the clock comprises thousands of precision components. The result is a remarkable interplay of sculptural ornament, fine craftsmanship and mechanical ingenuity. A lacquer painting depicting foreign envoys presenting treasures adorns the dial's upper section, adding a vivid cultural narrative to the elaborate composition.

The clock comes to life through an enchanting mechanical spectacle. Ten small jeweled flowers revolve around a larger central bloom, while the strawberry-shaped finial turns in rhythm with the music. Within the intricately carved gilt-bronze columns, a flowing water feature evokes the delicate movement of a cascading waterfall, bringing a sense of vitality and tranquillity to the scene.

Its most distinctive feature is the traditional bell-striking mechanism that plays Jasmine Flower, a beloved Chinese folk melody associated with the musical heritage of the Qing era. After two years of dedicated research and more than a thousand rounds of practical testing, master craftsman Ma Xianming refined the bell selection, tuning and mechanical transmission to recreate the melody with remarkable precision.

More than a clock, this exceptional creation is a miniature theatre of Chinese imperial aesthetics, where auspicious symbolism, musical heritage and mechanical artistry converge. Every moving flower, flowing detail and resonant note reflects the patience and ingenuity of traditional craftsmanship, making it a captivating centrepiece for distinguished interiors and a meaningful addition to a collection of exceptional clocks.
